The walls hold Basquiat and Oak Bluffs art — paintings that dare you to think impossible thoughts. My desk is wide, heavy, wooden — the kind that means business. And my deep brown armchair is where I do most of my living these days.

Today it’s where I almost fell apart.

Back to back meetings. No gaps, no grace periods. One moment I’m mapping out application UI user flows, the next I’m untangling React state object errors, then somehow I’ve pivoted to responding to influencer outreach emails, and then I’m deep in vendor contracts for the She Biology store launch. Three hours. Three hours of my brain running at full sprint with no water break, no pause, not even a real breath.

I don’t notice until I finally look up from my laptop.

My chest is tight. It hurts. Breathing feels like a negotiation.

I have to get up. The thought cuts through the noise like a command. I have to stop.

I walk out into my backyard — wide open, country quiet — and I let myself hope that the birds and my neighbor’s relentlessly barking dog will somehow talk my nervous system down. I raise my arms toward the sky. I let the sun land on my face. I breathe. Slowly. Deliberately. I tell my body it’s okay.

The feeling doesn’t go away.

It’s still there.

A few days ago, when I felt a panic attack creeping in, I knew exactly what to do. I switched my podcast over to Michelle Obama’s IMO without a second thought. I’ll listen to anything she’s on, honestly. I just need to hear her voice — that particular combination of softness, confidence, and power that still somehow feels motherly. It works. It always brings me back down.

I would call my own mother. But I know how that goes. She would panic, and then I’d spend my energy managing her fear instead of processing mine. So I don’t. I’ve learned not to.

I try the Michelle method today. I walk back inside, pull up the podcast, and wait for her voice to do what it always does.

It doesn’t work.

And that’s when I realize something else is wrong — not just with my nervous system, but with this house. Somewhere along the way, my home stopped being my refuge. It became an extension of my office. Every room carries a task. Every corner holds a deadline. If I’m here and I’m not working, some quiet, relentless voice starts whispering that I’m falling behind. That I’m failing. That love has to be earned through output.

I can’t breathe here either.

I grab my keys. I leave.

The deadlines are stacking like they have a personal vendetta against me.

Store launch — March 20th. Sales team training. Wholesale expectations. Vendor contracts. And somehow, none of that is even the hard part. The engineering work? That’s almost a relief. Give me a UI problem, a React state error, a scalability question — I know how to think my way through those. There’s a logic to code. A solution always exists if you’re patient enough to find it.

But managing this many moving pieces, this many relationships, this many timelines simultaneously — that’s a different kind of weight.

And here’s what stings the most: I put this on myself.

Every single deadline. Every expectation. Every impossible standard. I authored all of it. Nobody handed me this pressure — I built it, brick by brick, with my own ambition.

SMH.

But then I think about Bobbi Brown. Raised two kids. Built a cosmetics empire. Stayed married. And she did it without complaining, without crumbling. And my father — a Nigerian man who came to America with nothing and built a multi-million dollar business from the ground up. From nothing. So what exactly am I complaining about?

Then Renegade comes on.

And something shifts.

Jay-Z takes me back — all the way back. 30 Fayston Street, Boston, Massachusetts. I was raised in an era where gang violence wasn’t a statistic, it was the soundtrack. My neighbors were affiliated. Shootings were a nightly occurrence. That was just the world we lived in. What made my mother move to rural SC. And now — now I’m a Senior Software Engineer. A homeowner. A landowner. A 401K holder. A founder. A woman who built a prestige skincare brand from a memory of her mother’s rituals in Cross, South Carolina.

And somehow it’s still not enough? For whom?

I need air. Real air. I drive toward the water and let the beach do what Michelle’s podcast couldn’t today. Something about standing near something that vast and ancient reminds you that your problems, while real, are not the size you’ve been treating them.

And quietly, almost without me noticing, the reframe arrives.

Half of what’s terrorizing me is overthinking. The other half just needs me to be still and trust. To rest in the Lord instead of wrestling with Him. To stop treating faith like a footnote and let it be the foundation.

He is not punishing me with this expansion. He is preparing me for it. The chest pains, the panic, the overwhelm — this is what it feels like when a tent is being enlarged. It’s not breaking. It’s stretching.

I drive back home. I walk into my office. I settle back into the deep brown armchair behind the large, heavy, vintage wooden desk. Basquiat and Oak Bluffs still watching from the walls, still daring me to think impossible thoughts.

The chest pains are gone.

My capacity expanded.

Still a renegade — just doing it for Christ.

I am not premenopausal.
I am not postmenopausal.
I am not yet at that luminous, earned stage of maturity where a woman’s beauty deepens into something quieter and more sovereign.

But many of my friends are — women who bring me joy with their smiles, their stories, their encouragement.

And I watch them.

I watch how they move. How they date. How they laugh with a kind of earned freedom. How they speak about their bodies not with apology — but with authorship.

I remember watching a conversation inspired by Michelle Obama’s extended storytelling series — women in their fifties and beyond speaking openly about romance, companionship, desire, sensuality. They were dating. Thriving. Choosing. Not shrinking.

At Paris Fashion Week, Pamela Anderson created a stir by wearing no makeup — standing in full view of cameras that once demanded perfection. She was breathtaking. And still regarded as one of the most beautiful women on the planet.

What Happens to the Body

As women age, estrogen levels decline. Biologically, this shift affects collagen production, elasticity, and the body’s natural moisture levels. Skin tissue becomes thinner. More delicate. Less resilient.

This is not a flaw.

It is physiology.

The past few weeks have been a beautiful kind of busy — meetings with future partnership vendors, inventory updates, and quietly formulating the next chapter of She Biology: body care. (Yes, it’s happening.) We’re also stepping into a major retail partnership, which still feels surreal to write.

And… the She Biology Concept Store now has a tentative launch date: March 16th.

I’m equal parts energized and deeply aware of the weight of building something meaningful. It’s a steady hum of excitement and holy nerves.

I care about excellence — in the details, in the culture, in the way a brand feels when you walk into it. So I’ve been shaping our culture guides, refining the brand, defining leadership, and preparing to welcome beauty and skincare lovers who genuinely love people. The kind of team that understands that luxury is not just how something looks, but how it makes you feel.

There are still many variables, many moving pieces. But I’m learning to build in flow — to create without striving, to lead with intention, and to rest in Christ even while carrying vision. That posture has been my quiet strength through it all.

This is my laboratory.
My mirror is not a place of judgment—it is a place of listening.

Skincare is where I slow down enough to study myself. To research and analyze every blemish, every soft indentation, every pore that opens and closes like a quiet breath. This is not obsession. This is intimacy. This is literacy in my own skin.

With bare fingertips, I can trace the topography of my face. I can feel where inflammation lingers before it ever announces itself. I can sense dehydration not by sight alone, but by resistance—by how the skin answers back when I press. The skin speaks in texture before it speaks in color.

Long nails kept me at a distance from this conversation.

Without them, my hands become instruments—precise, intuitive, informed. I can massage lymphatic pathways without interruption. I can apply pressure exactly where tension lives. I can move product with intention, not caution. There is no barrier between my curiosity and my care.

This is where beauty and skincare meet.

Each line is a record of movement, of laughter, of seasons survived.

I warm my serums like a perfumer warms oils. I press creams into the skin as if sealing in a promise. I move slowly—not because I have time, but because I am choosing reverence. This is where science softens into art. Where formulation meets feeling.

Skincare is not something I rush through at the end of the day.

It is where I return to myself.

Building She Biology has been a gift into my life. Allowing me to explore so many different avenues within the beauty business.

I’ve learned that I must constantly curate what fills my ears, my eyes, my mind, and my heart — the voices and visions of women who build, lead, and create with elegance and ferocity. At a gathering not long ago, I listened to Rebecca Shostak, co-founder of Flodesk. She offered a line that lingered like perfume in the air, at once delicate and unforgettable: “Get in the trenches with your customer. Skid your knees right along with them. That is how you build community.”

I was in the front row when she said it, and though her words were for the room, I felt as though they were pressed directly into my skin. For me, they became a call to vulnerability — to stand unguarded, to create without apology, to show up without fear of what the world might whisper back.

And so I ask you — if you are even remotely drawn to the art of building a business: are you in the trenches with your customers? Do you feel their bruises, their beauty, their pain points as though they were your own?

Because perhaps that is where true commerce lives — not in transaction, but in communion.

My name is Chinenyem, and I am the founder of She Biology. But She Biology didn’t truly begin in 2020—it began long before, with my own body, my own skin, and my own mind asking for healing.

As a child, I lived under the weight of depression. Twice before middle school, I tried to leave this world. Therapy, my faith, and time became the scaffolding that helped me climb out of that darkness. But even after the light returned, there was residue. Stress lived in my body. My skin became its canvas.

By the time I was a young professional—working as a senior software engineer for the Department of Defense—I was surviving sleepless nights, coding systems meant to save lives, while my own body was unraveling. Eczema flares left scabs that peeled from my skin. Acne lingered across my face and body. Dark patches bloomed like bruises of exhaustion. My nights were long, my mind racing, my body restless.

I tried discipline: cutting out dairy and gluten, reshaping my diet, going to the gym. The eruptions slowed, but my skin never returned to ease. It held on to every stress I carried.

Then came the gift of CBD. A friend placed it in my hand with the casualness of a suggestion, but to me, it became a revelation. A few drops pressed into my skin at night, and something shifted. When I first stepped through the entrance, I didn’t find a store at all—I found a garden. A winding path of greenery led into a restaurant, and only after lingering there did it open into the shop itself. The experience was utterly transporting. I was captivated by the layering of it all: home goods arranged like art, objects and products curated as though you had stumbled into a living space that breathed with imagination.

This is the spirit I envision for the She Biology Concept Store—but reimagined with a modern elegance. Food-inspired skincare rituals, botanicals, and textures that honor the earth while enveloping the senses. A place where commerce feels like communion, and beauty is both ritual and refuge.

And here’s the serendipitous part: as I was writing this very post, an opportunity to bring a concept store to life found me. The timing feels fated—and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
